Introduction
Basketball City is a state-of-the-art sports and entertainment center located at Pier 36 on the East Side of New York City. When the HVAC system for this large-scale facility seemed insufficient, the client trusted Donnelly Mechanical, an EQUANS company, as the contractor tasked with identifying issues and offering solutions. Built on piers and elevated above water, this project contained a unique set of geographic challenges.
Challenges
The client recognized that their HVAC equipment performance was deteriorating at a worrying rate. Running for approximately seven years, the equipment was only at half the expected life cycle when issues of poor performance and premature failure were noticed. This project required a team capable of identifying and solving problems created by previous contractors, while also navigating the unique set-up of a sports and entertainment facility elevated above the East River of Manhattan.
Solution
Donnelly Mechanical did a full Systems Analysis of the existing system and found that poor maintenance and an incomplete installation and startup were the root cause of the ongoing issues rather than faulty equipment. We coordinated with the existing electrical, roofing and control contractors to put together a solution for the 70,000 square foot facility.
Results
Successful analysis and installation along with an extended multi-year warranty on parts and labor ushered in an ongoing preventive maintenance contract with the client.
