Introduction
Humber River Regional Hospital is Canada's largest regional acute care facility, serving more than 850,000 people in the northwest GTA. It is the first fully digital hospital in North America, home to Ontario's first Centre of Excellence for laparoscopic bariatric surgery and Canada's first nocturnal dialysis program.
Challenges
The facility is 1.7 million ft2 and can currently accommodate 656 beds, with the capacity to expand to 722 beds by 2025/2026. Not only does this hospital provide superb patient care, but it also strives to be among the most sustainable and energy-efficient hospitals in North America, setting a new benchmark for energy efficiency with LEED Gold certification.
Solution
The electrical system risers and power distribution were designed to interface with the robotic cart system, pneumatic tube system, automated laundry, pill distribution and garbage control systems. Plan Group managed and monitored site quality control using online data distributed to handheld devices. This helped to ensure that interface connections were correctly made.
Results
The HRH project increased capacity to meet the needs of the growing surrounding community by creating over 100 new beds and expanding emergency services to accommodate 15% more visits. Additionally, specialized geriatric outpatient services, clinics, therapy, medical consultation and emergency management services were enhanced. Infectious disease containment systems were also updated to monitor and prevent a wide range of infections.
The project surpassed the LEED Silver target, setting energy targets 40% higher than ASHRAE 90.1 standards, with a commitment to providing 100% fresh air.
