Introduction
It was in 2003 that National Capital Museum Reserve built a new 100,000 ft2 facility to house the national collections. The National Capital Museum Reserve is a highly secure conservation facility offering environmental conservation conditions tailored for each type of collection. Its implementation was based on three priorities:
-
Technical and technological performance
-
Conservation expertise
-
Concern for the well-being of employees
Challenges
The 11-storage rooms of the Museum are classified based on materials rather than artifact categories. Storage room humidity levels and temperatures are strictly controlled based on the type of materials stored to guarantee optimal conservation conditions. For example, artifacts made of solid wood will require a higher level of humidify than artifacts made of textile.
The Museum occupies the greater part of the building, while the National Museum of Fine Arts of Quebec occupies space totaling 13,000 ft2 for works that present special conservation challenges. The two museums share the common areas of this prestigious building.
